According to manager Sheldon Keefe, forward John Tavares of the Toronto Maple Leafs will miss a "minimum" of three weeks owing to an oblique (rib cage) injury. Tuesday during team practise, Tavares underwent tests that revealed the nature of his ailment.

In one of the team's two preseason games on Saturday against the Ottawa Senators, he spent 17 minutes, 14 seconds on the ice. Keefe said that since that game, he had been battling the problem.

The 32-year-old played 79 games the previous season and is entering his 14th. His 76 points and 27 goals helped the Leafs reach the playoffs the previous season. On Wednesday, Toronto plays its last preseason game against the Montreal Canadiens on the ice.

The team opens the regular season Oct. 12 at Montreal.
