AbbVie Immunology Scholarship in 2021

The AbbVie Immunology Scholarship is designed to provide financial support for exceptional students living with the following inflammatory diseases:

  • Ankylosing spondylitis (AS)
  • Crohn’s disease (CD)
  • Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS)
  • Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)
  • Psoriasis (Ps)
  • Psoriatic arthritis (PsA)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
  • Ulcerative colitis (UC)
  • Uveitis (UV)

Applicants will be evaluated based on community involvement, ability to serve as a positive role model in the immunology community and academic excellence.

The AbbVie Immunology Scholarship is for students living with AS, CD, HS, JIA, Ps, PsA, RA, UC, or UV who are seeking an associates degree, undergraduate degree, graduate degree or Doctorate from an accredited United States (US) university/college.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance, and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team. Awards for this scholarship are granted to eligible recipients without regard to creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, disability, or national origin.

Eligible Students:

It is not necessary for applicants to have taken, currently take, or intend to take in the future any medicine or product marketed by AbbVie; this will not be a consideration in the recipient-selection process. Applicants to the AbbVie Immunology Scholarship must be:

  • A US citizen or a legal and permanent resident of the US
  • Diagnosed with AS, CD, HS, JIA, Ps, PsA, RA, UC, or UV by a healthcare professional. (If the applicant has been diagnosed with more than one of these inflammatory diseases, the applicant should choose the most relevant inflammatory disease for this application.)
  • Enrolling in full-time undergraduate or graduate study at an accredited United States (US) two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the 2022-2023 academic year. Applicants must have completed high school or obtained a General Education Development (GED) certificate before the end of June 2022.

Those who do not receive a scholarship are invited to reapply in following years. Previous recipients of any AbbVie scholarships are not eligible to apply.

Employees of AbbVie and their immediate family members are not eligible. Healthcare providers and their immediate family members are not eligible. Patients contracted by AbbVie through Patient Health Perspectives are not eligible.

Selection of Recipients/Awards:

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Community Involvement
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model in the Immunology community
  • Academic excellence
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school, community activities and/or work experience (if applicable)
  • Honors
  • A letter of recommendation
  • An essay answering one of the following topics:
    1. Living with a chronic inflammatory disease may give you unique insights into the world around you. What have you learned about yourself during your journey living with your disease? How will you use that learning to tackle the new journey ahead as you pursue a degree?
    2. A sense of community is important when you may need support navigating through difficult times in your life. What role have you taken in your own community and why is that important to you personally? What impact has it had?
    3. Education can be a powerful tool that you can use to change the world. What would this scholarship mean to you and your educational goals? Would you do anything differently as a result of being awarded this scholarship?

Financial need is not considered.

Scholarship America will review applications and select finalists. All finalists will be evaluated by a panel of judges selected by AbbVie. Applicants will be judged based on community involvement, ability to serve as a positive role model in the immunology community and academic excellence. The judges will aspire for a representative sample across therapeutic areas, depending on submissions. All decisions made by the judging panel are final.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive an award of up to $15,000 dependent upon type of degree pursued:

  • Associate degree: $5,000
  • Bachelor degree: $15,000
  • Masters/PhD: $15,000

Scholarship recipients must show a high standard of academic achievement and will be required to demonstrate integrity of character throughout the duration of the scholarship for the 2022-2023 school year. In the event that a scholarship recipient is charged with an offence involving moral turpitude under federal, state and local laws, or commits any act which could bring AbbVie or the scholarship program into disrepute, AbbVie shall retain the right to disassociate and unaffiliated with the recipient.

Notification

All applicants will be notified of their status by January 11, 2022. Notifications will be made using the contact information applicants provided in their applications. Scholarship recipients will be notified the week of April 11, 2022. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as scholarship recipients. Applicants will have the option to opt-in to receiving communication from AbbVie, Inc. for future follow-up.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of AbbVie. Awards will be paid in one instalment in mid-July. Awards will be made payable to the institution for the student.

Obligations

Recipients have no obligation to AbbVie. They are, however, required to notify Scholarship America of any changes in address, school enrolment, or other relevant information, and to send a complete official transcript when requested.

Revisions

The AbbVie Immunology Scholarship is sponsored by AbbVie, and is subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws. AbbVie reserves the right to change, alter, or modify these rules and/or dates at any time without notice.

Required Material:

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.NOTE: If you are uploading a high school transcript, you must also upload a copy of your official SAT or ACT test scores if the test scores are not available on your high school transcript.

One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than December 10, 2021 5:00 pm CT.  Applicants are responsible for making sure their recommended completes the form and submits a letter of recommendation by this deadline date.

Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.

If you are selected as a semi-finalist you will be contacted by January 11, 2022 and provided with a Diagnosis Verification Form. This form must be printed, completed and signed by your healthcare professional to confirm you are living with AS, CD, HS, JIA, Ps, PsA, RA, UC, or UV. The form must be faxed or emailed from your doctor’s office directly to Scholarship America. No exceptions will be permitted.
