Hobart: Bangladesh defeated the Netherlands by nine runs in their first-ever Twenty20 World Cup Super 12 match on Monday. Taskin Ahmed took 4-25 for Bangladesh.

The Dutch, who struggled through the first round to make it to the Super 12, limited the Asian team to 144-8, and in the process, Paul van Meekeren became his nation’s joint all-time T20 wicket-taker.

However, they had a terrible start to the run chase, losing two wickets in the first two deliveries to Ahmed, then were run out twice in the next over to fall to 15-4 in the chilly Hobart weather.

The Netherlands were outscored 135 to 0 when Colin Ackermann played a lone hand and scored his first T20 half-century with a score of 62.

Shakib Al Hasan, the seasoned captain of Bangladesh, has participated in every World Cup since its start in 2007, but this was his first Super 12 triumph.

“I’ve played all editions but haven’t won, and that was on the back of my mind,” he added. “It was a significant win.”

“Taskin has been a reliable bowler for us; he has the knowledge and the speed. Because most of our team’s fielders are quick and nimble, we can potentially preserve five to ten runs on the field, which may make a significant difference.

For the Dutch, it was a crushing setback since they needed two points in a group that included included powerhouses South Africa, Pakistan, and India.

But Bangladesh was relieved since they had been in bad shape ever since the 2021 World Cup, losing 14 of their previous 19 T20 international matches.
