HEC will reintroduce the ‘Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme’ for students

In a big relief for students, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) confirmed that the Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme will be reinstated in the coming days.

During a press conference, HEC Chairman Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed stated that the HEC budget has been steadily decreasing while the number of universities has expanded.

“Universities are having issues as a result of the financial crisis,” he noted.

According to the Chairman, HEC has determined that the federal government’s money for universities would be divided among them based on their performance.

Dr. Mukhtar stated that the “HEC will also initiate a programme for online courses for students in Pakistan’s universities with support from Microsoft and various global organisations,” and that the “commission will shift the entire system of verifying degrees and receiving equivalence certificates completely online.”

The Chairman of the Higher Education Commission further stated that students from flood-affected regions will be exempt from paying fees for two semesters.
