“The new electronic interdependence recreates the world in the image of a global village.”

(Marshall McLuhan)

The new millennium is witnessing a complete revolution in the history of mankind and this revolution has been brought about by information technology. The vast potentialities of information technology have changed the very face of the world. So far man has successfully harnessed this technology for bringing about undreamed development in all the walks of life. As the world is heading towards a digital society, information technology has assumed unspeakable significance and has become the fastest growing field in the world.

“The electric age has established a global network that has much the character of our central nervous system.” (Marshall McLuhan)

Information technology means the study and use of electronic equipment, especially computers, for storing, analyzing and distributing information of all kinds.

Information technology is, beyond any doubt, the need of the hour and its significance will increase all the more in future. It has made our access to knowledge easier. In Pakistan, information technology was introduced on a limited scale, but soon it became the need of everybody. Now almost every literate person, student, scholar, businessman, doctor and government official is enjoying the benefits of information technology. According to Bill Gates, the C.E.O of Microsoft:

“Information technology and business are become inextricably interwoven. I don’t

think anybody can talk meaningfully about one without talking about the other.”

We are living in the age of digital revolution. Today’s world is changing fast and a new world order is emerging. Old trends are giving way to the new ones. Information technology has brought a revolution in the world. Mysteries are being resolved and enigmas are being solved with the help of information technology. People are becoming more and more aware of the world they live in. There is more enlightenment for people now than it was in the past.

Information technology is now the order of the day. Latest techniques are being applied to get the maximum benefits from I.T. Now it is accessible to all and sundry in the world and Pakistan is no exception. We have realized that if we want to keep pace with the fast-changing world, information technology is the right area for us to progress. Now information about anything is within our reach. It has opened up a new world to us.

“Information technology is at the core of how you do your business and how your business model itself evolves”. (Satya Nadella)

It’s pretty incredible to look back 30 years when Microsoft was starting and now, we are finally getting close to what may be called the digitalization of the work style. The advent of information technology in the current scenario has created high hopes among the millions of people of the developing countries. We know that a very large majority of people are still deprived of clean drinking water and basic health facilities. The population explosion has further worsened the things beyond endurance? Today, most people believe that the use of information technology can break the vicious circle of poverty and backwardness. It has virtually become the source of new jobs, industry, and recreation across the globe.

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Arthur C

The Internet has given birth to new opportunities for all walks of life. Governments use internet for internal communication and the distribution of information. Business organizations are offering numerous online services to customers. Many people use internet for shopping, paying bills and online banking. Educational institutions use the Internet for research purposes. They also deliver courses to students in remote areas, which is called distant learning. In words of Peter Thiel:

“Now, Technology just means information Technology”.

“A fundamental rule in technology says that whatever can be done will be done”.

Beginning with the invention of the printing press of in Germany in the 15th century, the speed of flow of information has now increased by leaps and bounds during the last four centuries. Newspapers, radio and later television have reduced the time span to almost zero between the communication of information to the people across the world. Computers have multiplied man’s capacity manifold to record, retrieve and share information.

It is a boon of the latest information technology that most of the fatal diseases and epidemics have been eliminated from a large part of the globe. Tele-medicine has now made possible the diagnosis and treatment of patients across the continents. The pathological reports can be sent from Karachi to America, England, Germany, France, and Canada within no time. The physician sitting in London can prescribe medicine on the internet after reading these pathological reports. In this way, our institutions of medicine can offer a wider and more effective range of health services to the people of our country. James Stover, in his renowned article “Information Technology in the Third World” writes:

“A combination of computers, satellite telephones, radio, television and other electronics

has made information technology more effective and more efficient.”

Information technology can provide easy access to the scholars and researchers, to books and journals in the entire world through E-libraries. Information technology has brought updated knowledge to the fingertips of the users. Information about anything is just a few clicks away now. Teleconferencing has reshaped the entire concept of sharing knowledge. Information technology is creating and enhancing job opportunities for qualified people. According to Thomas Hobbes:

“Science says the first word on everything, and the last word on nothing.”

Information technology has caused a more meaningful interaction among various countries. The developing countries are providing huge markets to the multinational companies of the advanced countries.

“Science surpasses the old miracles of mythology.” Emerson

Information technology has revolutionized the agricultural sector as well. The farmers can now maintain constant interaction with different purchasing organizations through telephone, fax and internet. The peasant of today is much more aware than that of the past. He, with a little effort, can remain in touch with the local as well as international markets. The advanced techniques in animal farming and dairy development can be learned through the use of computer and television.

“That is one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” – Niel Arm Strong

Skilled craftsmen and manufacturers can interact with the distant and foreign buyers. Buyers can send detailed specifications and even graphic designs of items required by them. Artisans can design their products accordingly. In this way, information technology helps them earn a respectable income from their skills.

Although the negative use of information technology, such as hacking, blackmailing, spreading misinformation and false propaganda, cannot be ruled out altogether, yet its innumerable benefits, undoubtedly, surpass its negativity. Moreover, this is the age of the 5th generation hybrid propaganda war, and without excelling in information technology we cannot fight the 5th generation hybrid war. Information technology has ushered the modern man in the era of satellite phones, internet shops, e-commerce, e-mail, mobile communication, and telemedicine, etc. The trends are healthy and likely to consolidate even in the poor and developing countries. According to Steve Jobs:

“Information technology is not a faith in science. It’s faith in people.”

Apart from its negative uses, we can safely say that the future of information technology is very bright in Pakistan. It is working wonders to solve the problems like disease, poverty, backwardness and lawlessness. It can help our students to know about what has been unknown for a long time. It can improve our image in the community of the word as a moderate and progressive nation. According to Albert Einstein:

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

The government in Pakistan is giving more and more incentives to encourage people in this field. It has tried to introduce it even in the small cities and villages. A sufficient portion of the budget is being allocated for it. So, we can say that information technology is among the top priorities of the government.

Therefore, we hope that the positive uses of information technology will bring in progress and prosperity in our country. It can be a Messiah for the salvation of a nation from backwardness and ignorance. The positive and constructive use of information technology can lead us from the junk piles of ignorance to the highway of peace, progress and prosperity.
