ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – A two-member fact-finding team has begun an investigation into the inexplicable death of prominent Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif, who was assassinated by Kenyan law enforcement in what they called a “mistaken identification.”

Officers from the Federal Investigation Agency and the Intelligence Bureau questioned Waqar and Khurram Ahmed, brothers who housed the late journalist in the East African country, regarding the murder.

The Pakistani squad landed in Nairobi as the incident sparked outcry in Pakistan, triggering the response of the Army and Intelligence chiefs, while many remain doubtful about his target killing.

According to local media reports, Arshad’s host acknowledged that he was slain due to misidentification. Investigators learned that one of the two brothers entertained a dissident journalist at the suggestion of a buddy.

Waqar informed the FIA team that on the day of Arshad’s death, he had invited a top journalist to dinner at his lodge outside the country’s capital.

He also recounted eating with the late journalist at their lodge, indicating that Sharif had gone with his brother Khurram. His brother somehow escaped the event, he said. Such assertions had already stirred speculation.

Arshad’s visa had been extended, according to the Ahmed brothers, since he expected to stay in Nairobi in the future days.
