Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. In this month Muslims offer fasting. Fasting in the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Muslims offer fasting and extra prayers in the month as according to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) door of heaven are opened in the month of Ramadan and the devils are chained up.
Timing of fasting starts from dawn and it ends at sunset. As timing of dawn and sunset is different in different parts of world there for timing of fasting are different in many parts of world. In summer Muslims in some parts of world have fasting of 22 hours while in other parts of world these timing are 11 hours. The meal Muslims take at the time of starting fasting is called sahur and the meal taken in evening at the end of fast is called iftar. Between these two meals Muslims are not allowed to eat, drink, smoke and have sex.
Ramadan is very important part of Islam. In Muslim countries office timing in Ramadan are changed. There are different laws in Muslim countries for Ramadan, for example it is against the law to eat or drink publically in the fasting time in Ramadan in many Muslim counties.
Ramadan is a kind of event which is celebrated in different ways by different Muslim societies. Special dishes are prepared for sahur and iftar. Hotels and restaurants offer different packages and meals for Ramadan. Attendance of Muslims highly increases in mosques in the month of Ramadan. Muslims offer prayer of taraweeh every night after the isha prayer.
Dua for fasting or Dua for sehri is read after taking meal of sahur.
