The word Jhang came from the Sanskrit word (jāṅgala) which means rough or forested terrain. The word Jungle also shares the same root. The term Jhang was derived from the Sanskrit word (jāṅgala).
Jhang Sial is the historic name of the locality, literally translating into ‘The terrain of the Sials’.
History of Jhang
Greeks army led by Alexander encamped here in Jhang and stayed some time to prepare to proceed ahead. Several local tribes like Vains, Longs, Nauls, and Noons are described to be the descendants of Alexander’s army men.
Muhammad bin Qasim conquered the nearby city of Multan, so the area of Jhang came under Arabs for a few centuries. Then the town of Jhang became part of the Multan province of Mamluks ruled by different rulers. The history of Jhang is the history of the Sial tribe as written in the Malommat e Jhang Book.
Jhang was built in 1288 by Maharaja Rai Sial, a Rajput chief and founder of the Sial Tribe. The Sial tribe his kin ruled this district ever since until the last Sial ruler of Jhang. Ahmad Khan (1812 to 1822) was defeated by Ranjit Singh after fierce fighting.
Under the collective rule of the Sial Khans of Jhang and other Sial sub-tribes such as the Rajbana and Bharwana in the zenith of their power the Sial country of Jhang extended up to the Muzaffargarh boundary in the south and the entirety of Chiniot, Kamalia and Kabirwala ilakas.
The territory extended to parts of Bhakkar and Sargodha. The Garh Maharajah and Ahmadpur Sial ilakas were added to the possessions of the Rajbana Sial tribe who drove out the Baloch tribes to the Thal and defeated the Nawab of Multan by the mid-17th century.
Under the British Raj, the towns of Jhang and Mighiana lying two miles (3.2 km) apart became a joint municipality then known as Jhang-Maghiana.
Maghiana lies on the edge of the highlands, overlooking the alluvial valley of the Chenab while the older town of Jhang occupies the lowlands at its foot.
The most famous of the district jhang is the shrine of Heer Ranjha which is situated nearly Faisalabad Road and with the main here stadium as well. The other reason why jhang is famous in the world is the shrine of Hazrat Sultan Bahoo in this district. If you talk about the famous thing of jhang in food that is the Sohn Halwa of Khawaja Sweets which is much famous in the world with its amazing recipe and taste.
One most unique things which are also famous in this city is the Thal Desert, which is also nearby district jhang and also in district Bhakkar as well. Future talk about this city of love is that it has two rivers namely Chenab and Jehlum Rivers and these rivers meet at Treemu Head Works Jhang which is also a popular place for the people of jhang for outings.
The local peoples of jhang mainly spoke Punjabi Language and some proportion of the population spoke urdu and Saraki as well.
Jhang is also famous religiously as well as it has the Mazar of Shaheed Jhangvi R.A in the main city including Mahad Ul Faqeer Islami on Toba road jhang under the guidance of the Hazart Peer Zulfiqar Ahmad Naqashbandi.

Trimmu Head Jhang (1940)
Trimmu Barrage was constructed in 1938-39 by English engineers as a part of the Haveli Project. It is located just below the confluence point of the river Jhelum and Chenab.
Trimmu Barrage is located at a distance of about 25 kilometers from Jhang Sadar. It falls in semi arid zone with desert on its right and Rechna Doab on its left. It feeds Haveli canal, Rangpur canal and Trimmu-Sidhnai Link canal.
It is a favorite resort for tourists and picnickers and offers enjoyment at the trip by motor launch. There is also plenty of fish at the Headworks. Rahu, Mirgala etc. are some important fishes found there.
Rivaz Bridge Jhang (1904)
Rivaz Bridge (locally known as Chund Pull) is a bridge over the Chenab river. It is one of the oldest bridges in Pakistan and was built-in 1905 by British engineers.
It is located near Chund Bharwana, Jhang District. Bridge has 750 meters in length. Its name is after the nearest town Chund Bharwana. It is 14 km from Jhang. From 1905 to 2020 road traffic and railways traffic used to pass on the same bridge.

Date Palm Research Sub Station Jhang
This station was established in 1945 when Sardar Lal Bahadur Singh selected this area due to its favorable climate which is hot and dry. In 1945 suckers of different varieties were brought from Basra (Iraq) and planted here.
Present Date Palm Research Sub Station Jhang was taken by Ayub Agricultural Research Institute Faisalabad, during the year 1960-61 and has preserved the germplasm of 44 varieties of date palms including Ajwa, Amer, Barhee, Mejdool, Khalas, etc.
The total area of this sub-station is 52 Acres.
The main objectives of the research station are the selection and acclimatization of local and exotic varieties of dates, to provide the pedigree plants to the farmers at cheaper rates, to find out the causes of various disorders and diseases in dates and their control, etc.
Thal Desert of Jhang
Thal desert appears to be the oldest geologic formation similar in character to the Bikaner desert, of which it must at one time have formed a part when both were said to be under the sea. The origin of the Thal sand presents an interesting problem.
Shorkot Bhir Jhang (Mound)
The mound spreading over 20 km, including 80 acres fortified area, gaining a height of 300 feet, is the greatest mound in the Indo-Pak subcontinent.
At the present stage double boundary wall, three towers, and four main gates of the fort are available. The boundary walls are 15-20 feet wide.
