From his book, which has been excerpted, he revealed that after retiring in 2003, he developed a cocaine addiction and started partying nonstop. It got so severe that he started relying on it. He even spent a short time in rehab, which was awful and did not really help. In order to get himself out of this jam, he gave credit to his late wife Huma, who had genuinely told him that he needed help.

Wasim made known:

I like indulging myself and going out to parties. In south Asia, the famous culture is all-consuming, alluring, and corrupting. You can attend ten parties in one night, and some people do. And it had an impact on me. My technological tools become vices. The worst part is that I became dependent on cocaine. My usage gradually became more serious to the point that I felt I required it to function when I was offered a line at a party in England. It began innocently enough.

He said that Huma told him he needed treatment after learning the truth. He continued, saying:

It infuriated me. It led me to be dishonest. I am aware that Huma was frequently alone during this period. To be near her mom and siblings, she mentioned wishing to relocate to Karachi. I was on guard. Why? Partly because I enjoy travelling alone to Karachi and feigning work while actually spending days on end partying. After some time, Huma discovered that I was lying when she found a package of cocaine in my wallet. You need assistance. I agreed. It was becoming out of control. It escaped my control. One line would multiply into two, which would then multiply into four, which would then multiply into two. Sleep was impossible for me. I had trouble eating.

Wasim has further stated that the celebrity he previously enjoyed was what motivated him to do this:

Despite my best efforts, I still harboured some resentment for the humiliation of what had happened to me. My pride was wounded, yet my lifestyle’s allure persisted. I momentarily considered divorcing. I decided to go for the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy where, away from Huma’s daily inspection, I resumed using.

A uncommon fungal infection caused Huma’s death later on. This forced Wasim to calm down and recognise what he was doing. He attributes his life’s turnaround to his late wife.

Huma’s final altruistic, unintentional deed was to help me overcome my drug abuse. I haven’t looked back since that way of life came to an end.

Wasim Akram received harsh criticism for this information, yet the majority of people praised him for his bravery:
